Finished The Paul

Pastel of Greyhound face
Paul

I love this….

First of all, I love Paul. He is SUCH a goofball and the photo that I used as the source for this painting really captured his continuously goofy look. This dog started life on an obsolete dog track but has ended up with my son and daughter-in-law in Philadelphia with his own bedroom and a neighborhood of enthusiastic fans. He’s an influencer, (check out @riskitallpaul on IG) so he pays his own rent.

Second of all, I love how easy it is to add lights on top of darks with pastels. After arguing with watercolors (that use the white of the paper as it’s only light source so if things get too dark, you’re done) it’s really fun to work in a medium that is so forgiving.

Third of all, I love how much energy all those lines create. This piece almost hums with it. It was a big reason why I chose to paint it and I think it’s why I banged it out so fast. It kept my attention, which is not an easy thing to do (SQUIRREL!).

Fourth of all, I love the square format…..I have no idea why…..don’t @ me.

See ya next week!
